The risk of counterfeit drugs making their way into the pharmaceutical supply chain is a growing a global concern.  Whilst some of these counterfeits are easily identifiable the clandestine manufacturers are becoming ever more advanced, sometimes employing very similar feedstocks or even repackaging rejected or rejected manufacturing runs.  Identification of these counterfeit pharmaceuticals can often require quite advanced techniques such as EDS/EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) and EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) which can readily identify spurious ingredients or even identify “high quality” counterfeits through particle size analysis, coating thickness measurement or even inspection of the packaging.
